Starting from January 1st, 2025, the FuelEU Maritime regulation will officially come into effect, requiring maritime carriers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions on routes within and to/from the EU.
Objectives:
- 2% reduction in emissions by 2025
- 6% reduction by 2030
- 80% reduction by 2050
Warning for ships with high Greenhouse Gas (GHG) intensity: Failure to comply will result in significant penalties, calculated based on the difference between the required and actual GHG intensity, multiplied by energy use, up to €2,400 per tonne VLFSO energy equivalent.
Compliance Options: Maritime carriers can choose one of the following methods to meet emission reduction requirements:
- Pay a fee: Pay a “green” fee to FuelEU if using fuel that exceeds the allowed limit.
- Use clean fuel: Switch to using biofuels or Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)/Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
- Group ships: Combine compliant ships with non-compliant ones to offset emissions.
