Decarbonising maritime transport – FuelEU Maritime

October 16, 2024

Starting from January 1st, 2025, the FuelEU Maritime regulation will officially come into effect, requiring maritime carriers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions on routes within and to/from the EU.

Objectives:

  • 2% reduction in emissions by 2025
  • 6% reduction by 2030
  • 80% reduction by 2050

Warning for ships with high Greenhouse Gas (GHG) intensity: Failure to comply will result in significant penalties, calculated based on the difference between the required and actual GHG intensity, multiplied by energy use, up to €2,400 per tonne VLFSO energy equivalent.

Compliance Options: Maritime carriers can choose one of the following methods to meet emission reduction requirements:

  • Pay a fee: Pay a “green” fee to FuelEU if using fuel that exceeds the allowed limit.
  • Use clean fuel: Switch to using biofuels or Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)/Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
  • Group ships: Combine compliant ships with non-compliant ones to offset emissions.
